If you are a regular viewer of sports shows aired on various India TV satellite channels, chances are that you have noticed not many woman broadcaster are in the fray. Though Mandira Bedi changed the equation somewhat by hosting the coverage of cricket world cup in India, many experts feel that it was more about her beauty and attire than her knowledge of the sports. However, the beautiful Mayanti Langer is here to change the common notion that women only add to the glamour quotient as a broadcaster and have not much insight to offer into the proceedings on field. 

Mayanti Langer - The Success Story

Mayanti Langer made her presence felt on the scene of India TV channels and all over the world as a sports journalist with Zee Sports. She is the daughter of Mrs. Preminda Langer - a teacher by profession who has won a few awards - and Major General Sanjiv Langer, who was employed with the United Nations.

Mayanti Langer received her BA (Hons) from Hindu College under Delhi University. Her interest in football grew while she was in the United States, where her father was working in the United Nations. She started playing for her college football team in the beginning and later became a guest anchor for the broadcast of a few FIFA beach football matches. After the broadcast became a success and Mayanti caught the attention of the viewers with her intelligent analysis, not to mention her beauty. She was offered the position of a host and associate producer for Football Café, aired on Zee Sports.

Joining Zee Sports just a few weeks after she appeared for her graduation exams, Mayanti got busy over the microphone, bringing the action of Serie A and Bundesliga right into the homes of the Zee Sports viewers. Her shows were scheduled during the pre-match, post-match, and half-time periods.

During her stint at Zee Sports in the beginning, she didn't have any idea of the Indian Football League. However, once rights to the IFA tournaments scheduled to be held in August 2005 were acquired by Zee Sports, she became popular as a football commentator. That was before she got her own show on Zee Sports called Football Cafe, which shows the human face of the Indian stars.

During the FIFA World Cup 2010, Mayanti headed a team of expert panelists along with John Dykes and impressed with her match previews and post-match analysis for ESPN that were aired in the Indian subcontinent.

When asked about her favorites before the semifinals, she predicted in favor of the Netherlands beating Uruguay, but hinted that anyone between Germany and Spain could win the second semifinal. However, she declined to comment on who would lift the Champion's Trophy though she told that the young side of Germany has annihilated almost everyone that they met en route to the semifinals.

Mayanti Langer has gone from strength to strength since her debut as a sports journalist on Zee Sports. At present, she divides her time among ESPN, Zee Sports, Star Sports, and Ten Sports. She was a part of the recently concluded broadcast team for the Indian Cricket League on Ten Sports and Zee Sports, where she hosted the interview segment during post-match, half-time, and pre-match shows. She also played the role of an anchor on Zee Sports for the New Delhi-based Nehru Cup that was held at the Ambedkar Stadium.
